HISTORY

 

 
Historic Watch Hill dates back to the 19th Century providing a summer resort to the rich and famous where access was achievable only by water ferries.
The community is flush with mansions and luxury homes - yet affordable as a destination resort.. The Historic Watch Hill Business District fronting on Bay Street overlooking the Watch Hill Yacht Club and Little Narraganset Bay, has several retail shops and lodging accommodations. The sunsets on Bay Street are magnificent highlighting the gracious yachts that fill the harbor.
 
The Watch Hill Lighthouse is an historic treasure guarding the waters where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Long Island Sound separating Montauk, NY, Watch Hill, RI, and Stonington, CT. - a view that can only be seen from the Watch Hill Inn Hotel.
The Watch Hill Inn, built in 1845 as the Narraganset Inn, is the oldest and only original tallest structure in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. It recently was renovated and converted to (10) two-bedroom and (1) one-bedroom condo residences.

In addition, the Watch Hill Annex was added to the complex offering (21) one bedroom Studio Residences with living room, fireplace, private deck, and parking.
The Ninnegret Boy bronze sculpture overlooks the Watch Hill Yacht Club and the harbor promenade a must walk during sunset.

BEACHES

  Watch Hill has three beautiful beaches.

Nappatree Point Beach is 1 1/2 miles long with the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound comes together.

Carousel Beach is at the end of Bay Street and is ideal for families with small children with lockers, showers, toilets and life guard.

East Beach is fronted on the Atlantic Ocean with soft sand, waves sometimes ideal for surfing, and endless walks passed the mansions of Watch Hill.

FISHING

  Watch Hill is a fisherman's delight with surf fishing available on both East Beach and Nappatree Point Beach where snorkeling and scuba diving is a challenge.

BOATING

  Historic Watch Hill is a yachting community featuring the newly renovated Watch Hill Yacht Club.

Fishing boats, charters, moorings, and dock facilities are available during the High Season.

Block Island, Newport, Fisher's Island, Montauk, Sag Harbor, Stonington, Mystic Seaport, and many other destinations are accessible from Watch Hill harbor.

 

CASINOS

    In addition to the beach and waterfront activities, the nearby casinos offer nightlife within a short drive from Watch Hill.
  Foxwood's Resort Casino is 25 minutes northwest of Watch Hill located on Rte 2
  The Mohegan Sun is 35 minutes northwest of  Watch Hill, j ust over the Connecticut border.
 

GOLF

    There are several public and private golf courses within 20 minutes of Watch Hill. The famous Misquamicut Golf & County Club hosts one one the most beautiful private New England courses located on the Atlantic Ocean coast line located in the heart of Watch Hill.

SHOPPING

    Shopping abounds on Bay Street the main road in Historic Watch Hill, fronting the harbor overlooking Little Narraganset Bay. After a day at the beach, folks window shop for antiques, art, clothing, jewelry and many other local retail operations hoping to find something to remember their visit.
 

RESTAURANTS

    The Watch Hill high season occurs form late May Memorial Day Weekend to September Labor Day Weekend.
Dining accommodations are affordable and range from low to high cuisine.

There are (3) restaurants on Bay Street offering a variety of food selections.

Monday - Friday 5pm - 9pm  Saturday & Sunday  12pm - 9pm

     38 Bay Street, Watch Hill  - offers a variety of dining experiences with a diversified Menu.
          The Sun Deck is a cocktail experience for adults featuring magnificent sunsets and water front views
          The Patio Deck is a family experience quietly tucked away below a large tented patio.
          The Restaurant is climate controlled environment with a fireplace for cooler nights and a full bar.

  Olympia Tea Room
      50 Bay Street, Watch Hill - is a small charming bistro with limited sidewalk tables and an extensive wine list.
 
  St. Clair's Cafe
     52 Bay Street, Watch Hill - offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They are known for their ice cream selections.
 

TRANSPORTATION

    Watch Hill is in the Township of Westerly, Rhode Island just east of the Connecticut border. There are several modes of access .
 
  By Air:     Westerly Airport located 10 minutes away accommodates small jets and charters to Block Island
  By Train:   Amtrak Westerly Station is 15 minutes away and taxis are available door to door.
  By Sea:    Boat access is in the harbor with public dockside and Watch Hill Yacht Club moorings.
  By Car:     A car trip via I-95 from New York is 2 1/2 hrs, Boston 1 1/4 hours, and Hartford 1 hour.

Once in Watch Hill, you can walk to all the facilities and enjoy a car free lifestyle if you so choose.
